Cretan Villages Rethymnon

This excursion invites you to visit and explore the centers of religion and culture in our island. We will start from Arkadi Monastery a 5th century holy site which is one of Crete’s most venerated symbols of freedom. The defiant defence of this fortress-like monastery during the 1866 Cretan rebellion against the Turks is still legendary and inspirational. The Monastery is surrounded by a defensive precinct with two main entrances. There are also two storey guest houses, a refectory, store houses, a cellar, a cook house and an oven. Our next stop is Eleftherna, a Dorian and later Roman settlement. This historic site is spectacular and surrounded by hills and gorges. Eleftherna is the most important archaeological site in Rethymno and one of the most interesting current excavations being conducted by the Archaeological section of the University of Crete. We will also visit Margarites which is a small mountain village located 30klm Southeast from Rethymnon. Many of the families living in this village are involved in the making, firing and distribution of pottery. Strolling around this picturesque village one can see old buildings with ornate doors and walls dating from the Venetian era.
